WayPoint
Storm Éowyn left up to 1.25 million customers in Ireland with little to no mobile or broadband coverage, alongside disruptions to other key utilities, for up to two weeks. This left many people in rural areas struggling to access information and resources, coordinate debris-clearing efforts, and care for vulnerable neighbours and family members.
In response, I designed WayPoint, a communication support device and power bank intended for use during widespread communication and utility outages following severe storms. The device is aimed at rural households, particularly in situations where formal support is limited and neighbours take the initiative in helping one another. By allowing users to send short messages without relying on centralised infrastructure, WayPoint enables information sharing, mutual care, and community-led action.
As a product designer, I am interested in social and sustainable design, and WayPoint explores climate resilience through the lens of emotional and community resilience.
