Susan Moore

Trace Elements

Susan’s practice considers trace elements: the fragments, suggestions, and memories through which the past shapes the future. These traces speak of what has been while hinting at what is yet to come. Her work reflects an interest in ephemerality and the transient nature of experience.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world, particularly the quiet transformations that signal the end of winter, Susan reflects on the unseen processes that support future growth: the changes occurring beneath the surface at the threshold of spring. Roots strengthen, bulbs gather energy, and the soil quietly holds the memory of previous seasons. These structural elements, often unnoticed, create the conditions that allow new life to unfold.

Working across a range of media, Susan creates pieces that evoke a sense of impermanence and quiet transition. Layers, marks, and partial images appear and dissolve, suggesting both presence and absence. Through these processes, the work reflects on how small, often overlooked elements accumulate over time, contributing to cycles of renewal and transformation.

Rather than capturing a fixed moment, Susan’s work invites viewers to consider the fleeting and shifting nature of perception and memory, and the subtle connections between traces of the past and future possibilities.
