Rhodo

Rhododendron ponticum is a dense, evergreen shrub originally native to parts of southern Europe and western Asia. It is an invasive species in Ireland and spreads aggressively in woodlands and national parks. Rhododendron disrupts ecosystems, harms native wildlife habitats, and is difficult and costly to remove or control. Mapping is essential for understanding the full extent of its spread and for identifying areas where it continues to grow in large quantities. Accurate, up-to-date mapping helps conservation groups and land managers prioritise control efforts and protect vulnerable habitats.

Rhodo enables volunteers and recreational users to contribute to the mapping process in Irish national parks. It acts as a point of contact within the park where users begin a mobile mapping process on their phones. Users are guided step-by-step through the experience and supported in producing accurate data for use in national park control efforts.
