Hestia’s Kitchen Table
The artist draws her grandmother and earlier generations of grandmothers working in solidarity, creating a feminist myth centred on valued labour within a creative domestic space. Hestia’s Kitchen Table reimagines the Greek goddess Hestia as the creator of a material culture of the home.
Hestia carbonises household implements once used by generations of women to maintain the home, preserving and transforming them into charcoal. Although the implements still resemble their original function, they are now tools for drawing and mark-making.
(The tea caddy on the table belonged to my mother and was one of the many tins I used to carbonise clothes pegs into charcoal.)
