Gone to Seed
The abject, as defined by Saoirse O’Boyle, is the hazy, indolic space between the fragile milk-skin of subjectivity that membranes “self” from “other”. The artist wants to live and die inside that membrane.
Saoirse O’Boyle is a perfumer and multidisciplinary artist from rural Ireland. Her work explores concepts of abjection, animalism, and archiving. To this end, she uses scent as a medium, translating desire into cumin and civet, and nostalgia into patchouli.
Gone to Seed utilises over thirty types of material, including human hair, orange membranes, and old slippers, to form an organic tapestry scented with a perfume of the artist’s own formulation — one that faithfully archives many lifetimes of rolling around in the mud.
