Englishby’s Circus

“Yes, we are living in a mad, mad world, but there’s still magic to be found — even if you have to go through contortions to find it.”
— Laird Borrelli-Persson, Vogue Runway.

I am fascinated by the “clown”: its immediately recognisable look and the very particular aesthetic of the circus. The clown character is so synonymous with the circus that it has undergone many metaphorical transformations. It is the world of the circus and all of its trappings that I am interested in exploring — the sensory overload of colour, noise, and smell, the glitter, lights, and the kitsch of the tent’s intimate space.

Through my practice of crochet and stitch, I have created a fantasy character that personifies my circus.
