House of Memphis
Memphis Zuza is a grassroots photographer based in Cavan. His work revolves around identity, found family, and nightlife. He works primarily through digital processes, with a background in archival studies. Memphis’ practice centres on portraiture, exploring queer lives within contemporary Ireland.
His work aims to represent marginalised communities within society. The intention is to humanise the people Memphis works with, showcasing life beyond performance. This is done in a manner unlike how the media usually portrays these communities; they are not costumes or fetishes to be displayed. Memphis uses his photographic ability to tell stories of home and family, and to explore how non-nuclear the lives of queer people can be.
House of Memphis is a project founded on the backbone of 1970s queer culture. The book presents itself as an album of memories, personal stories, and curated editorial photography. Memphis’ ambition is to showcase the non-nuclear connections queer people have with themselves, and within their friendships and relationships. He challenges the idea that home is simply the four walls of a place. It can also be a green room after a drag show, or the feeling of community at a gay bar.
