Families Like Ours
What does an Irish family look like?
Families Like Ours illustrates growing tensions surrounding racism and fascism in Ireland. Using her own family as a case study, Leila Adelaide explores how austerity policies and the housing crisis have bolstered the far right and affected Ireland's immigrant community through film and illustration.
Leila contrasts the mundanity of immigrant life with important moments in modern Ireland's cultural context in order to expose the hypocrisy of the immigrant scapegoat.
The project asks the viewer to understand: to understand that families like hers are perfectly normal; to understand how government policy failed the working class and immigrants; and to understand how immigrants are simultaneously failed by a corrupted system whose failures they are blamed for.
What does an Irish family look like? There isn't a clear answer, but it is time for the system to stop failing them.
