Sotto Voce (Under the Breath)

“You used to be such a nice little girl,” my aunt said.

I was 12, and angry – and now I was ashamed too because being nice was everything. So I smiled and the dark stayed inside.

But it didn’t go away.

These days, it comes painted in colour and light and ribboned with humour. However, squint your eyes and the decades of suppressed rage bubble through.

You could blame gender stereotypes, biological constructs, systematic injustice, misogyny, inequality, microaggressions, sexual assault, objectification, benevolent sexism, glass ceilings, slut-shaming…

Or you could just say, fuck that shit.

In paint. In technicolour.

Then hang it up as decoration.
