The Imaginary Enemy
There is a hidden world within us all. Ashamed emotions are brought to the surface through Iseult Ní Bhraonáin’s work The Imaginary Enemy.
Abstracted oil paintings depicting figures confined in deep-edge frames reveal the internal self trapped within, struggling to break free. Floating uncanny ink portraits include the viewers in this journey. Being unaware of your surroundings will confront you with one of these distorted figures, encouraging mindfulness of their environment, and most importantly themselves. The repressed subconscious escapes out from behind the painting through a projected amorphous animation emulating the ever-changing self.
This work highlights how emotions crave to be experienced and shared; they confess to us information about who we are. A mixed-media approach reveals aspects of the self when dismissed and ignored create a distorted sense of self. Self-reflection is encouraged, as what is buried will always come to light in uncontrolled ways.
