Grief Before Loss

This project is comprised of large and small-scale oil paintings that focus on bright bold colours, text and small bouts of repetition to tell a narrative. The pieces emerge through different techniques according to the artist’s interpretation and processing of a moment gone by. The brushstrokes are often meditative and confident; this is her experience.

The compositions draw on the artist’s personal archive, mostly domestic scenes from her life with her grandmother.
The theme for this work emerges from Grace’s own current experience of anticipatory grief as she assumes a more caregiving role during her grandmother’s progression through dementia.

Through her practice, she externalises this intimate, internal, emotional process and portrays grief as a constant yet subtle presence within everyday life—non-linear, personal, and intertwined with routine. While the work helps her process her own experience, it also invites open conversations about grief before loss, encouraging reflection and engagement.
