Home Is Where the Heart Is
My work draws from my experience as a member of the Nigerian diaspora and takes inspiration from Romanticism and its concept of “imagined realities”.
I focus on romanticising the past through memories of a place left behind, while maintaining an imagined version of that place, frozen in time. These memories are often grounded through objects that hold a tangible connection to one's culture, offering a way to “go home” to a version of a place that no longer exists physically, but only in one’s mind.
The result of my project is a collection of paintings of objects that link both my own memories and culture. This is accompanied by moving-images that subtly give these objects context and illustrate some of my own memories.
