Evelina Sopule
she/her
Four Places, One Body
Evelina paints in traditional oil painting techniques while also interlinking modern technology to benefit her work. Her main focus is exploring layers of identity shaped by place culture and memory. Born into a blend of Russian, Latvia and Irish heritage, her art is rooted in navigating these intertwined backgrounds and contrasts between them.
She creates large scaled collage style paintings that merge traditional technique with a contemporary sensibility. Her paintings represent the reminders and feelings she experiences from each background, using old family photos, childhood pictures and memories from each place. Her compositions are bold, bright and saturated, reflecting both the emotional intensity of her subjects and her own personality.
The work draws from personal experience, visual memory and cultural symbolism to construct scenes that feel at once familiar and fragmented, allowing people with the same cultural background relate and feel seen, as well as allowing everyone else feel connected to the familiarity.
