Box in the Corner

In the wake of a renewed patriotism among my generation, I explore the gap between our critical understanding of the Troubles, and its distortion through popular culture.

In the absence of sustained historical education, entertainment media has come to shape how we understand Irish identity. While we readily discuss these representations, we shy away from the historical contexts behind them.

When recruiting participants, I was frequently met with the response, “I wouldn’t have anything to say about that,” revealing a broader uncertainty in how we engage with our own history and cultural identity.

Through conversation, my participants reflect on their relationships to Irish identity, history, and culture.

I invite you to partake in these conversations.
