White Blood
‘White Blood’ refers to an ancient theory that breast milk was purified blood.
This work reflects on milk as a material that connects nourishment, labour, and female lineage. Drawing from my grandmother’s life as a dairy farmer, and from the women I have grown up around, this installation considers the care and labour involved in sustaining animals, family, and the self. Through video, sculpture, and imagery, I explore how milk moves through cycles of dependency, labour, and nourishment.
Through this work, I draw parallels between the lives of women and animals, using milk as a metaphor for love and labour. I consider the weight of womanhood and the complex relationships many of us have with expectation and our bodies.
