Ward (In)patient
Dolgeai Basco is a printmaker and installation-based artist. Her work delves into the connection between emotions, play and comfort which stem from her personal experiences with a leukaemia diagnosis. Through her core practice of printmaking and installation art, she analyses themes of childhood resilience and the power of creative imagination as a vital tool for younger patients. She is captivated by how visual language can become a communication outlet for children with similar upbringing experiences.
Dolgeai creates soft sculptures that are reminiscent of leukaemia cells that grow in a variety of forms. Through processes of sewing and printmaking, the work allows her to embody the role of a surgeon examining a patient. While building a conceptualisation of hospital environments, spaces where play and comfort are integral outlets for recovery, are formed. They break normality of how art is viewed inside medical spaces. The intention is to revive the sense of imaginative play that is typically lost during medical journeys.
