The source of my inspiration for these works initially came from my connection to Valentia Island. In my mind, the colours, contours, textures, and shapes of the island had merged with the dots and dashes of morse code with which my father, as a radio officer in the island's radio station, used to communicate over vast expanses of land and endless blue sea. The wonder of coded messages travelling through cables and radio waves held my fascination and was intrinsically linked to the physical elements of the island. My work aims to express visually and texturally the juxtaposition of these aspects.
The materials used and their form embody the ethereal and tangible elements of this concept. Connections through space-time are part of the human condition, and these artefacts try to attest to the gregarious nature of mankind and its perpetual strive to communicate and disseminate information.
