Out of Place
Out of Place is a process-based project inspired by Tehching Hsieh's endurance in "Time Clock Piece", the sense of the 'present tense' captured in Alex Katz's subway drawings, and the breaking of implicit workplace rules in Pilvi Takala's "The Trainee".
I created a notebook drawing every waking hour for one week, wherever I happened to be at the time. This generated a recording, or trace, of my typical weekly routine. Bus journeys, office conference rooms, evening classes at NCAD, meals, television, tea, and meta drawings of drawing all feature in the pages of the notebooks produced. The images generated in the notebooks later fed into more finished works.
The process of recording time and place forms an introspective lens. Under this interrogative field of view, routine, discipline, and the blurred lines between art practice and day-to-day life come into sharper focus.
