Catherine Ennis
Nature
I draw and paint landscapes as they transform through the seasons, using charcoal, soft pastel, oil pastel, and acrylic paint. My work explores the relationship between nature and the man-made world, capturing the changing qualities of light, shadow, texture, and movement that emerge over time.
The places I paint are locations I have visited or lived in, and the work becomes both an exploration of landscape and a personal archive of memory and experience. Much of my recent work focuses on the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin, where I have studied the interaction between the organic and the constructed. I have also explored landscapes in Ireland and Canada, responding to their differing atmospheres, climates, and seasonal changes.
My creative process begins with observational studies and preparatory sketches in charcoal and pastel, allowing me to investigate composition, structure, and light before beginning a painting. The works presented in this exhibition comprise a collection of acrylic paintings that reflect my ongoing engagement with landscape, memory, and the changing natural environment.
