Millies
Millies is a collection of fashion textiles inspired by the mill workers in Belfast, including my great grandparents who worked in several mills across the North of Ireland. The collection features rusts, browns, greys and blues from the brickwork found at Conway Mill, one of the last standing mills in Belfast and where my great grandparents worked for a period of time. With this project, I aim to connect to my great grandparents and revitalise craft and the importance of textiles.
I have drawn inspiration from traditional weaving and hand knitting techniques such as tartans, twills and cabling. With an emphasis on heritage and sustainability, every fabric in this collection is made from 100% natural fibres, including lambswool, Shetland wool, Donegal wool and hemp. I aimed to produce long-lasting, durable fabrics for outerwear that can be passed down through generations.
