Royal Hospital Kilmainham

Angela has explored the buildings that comprise the Royal Hospital Kilmainham the construction of which date back to the 17th century. These buildings originally operated as a home for retired soldiers. Investigating the unseen corners and searching back for the original purpose of the individual buildings provided rich material for images. Photography formed the basis for researching the project.

Initially Angela used collage as the medium for this subject, with the windows and stonework of the buildings providing a wealth of inspiration. The painting is of one of the collage images and it includes, among other magazine sourced images, two aspects of the RHK, a large window from the main courtyard which reflects the entrance to the IMMA galleries, and the steps that lead to the walled garden. A nod to the past with an eye on the present day.
