Dumhcha
Sand dunes are fragile, beautiful landscapes which are vital habitats for plants and animals, and they act as natural coastal defences. Climate change is causing their erosion and destruction. Various techniques are used to protect the dunes such as boulder placement, and fencing to reduce the impact of the sea, wind and people on the dunes. Some consider the boulders to be ugly and ruin the beach perspective, whilst others see their power and strength in protecting the dunes.
The work, 'Dumhcha' consists of a series of paintings, in various sizes, of wide and detailed views of the sand dunes. There are individual paintings and books of small paintings. The works are made with acrylic paint and paper, using various tools to create physical materiality, texture and to explore colour mixing. The works show the beauty, fragility, texture, destruction and protection of the dunes.
